The result of a collaboration between the Finnish artistic collective WAUHAUS and the Estonian choreographic production house Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava, Fluids propels the dancers' bodies on an incredibly slippery stage. The cause is a product called J-Lube, a lubricant of formidable efficiency, which forces the performers to a gestural language while instability, crossed by an irremediable grace.
This astonishing device reveals bodies that are magnificently vulnerable, limited and that dissolve into each other. A subtle composition that invites us to let ourselves be crossed by emotions and apprehend the concepts of empathy, intimacy or failure. How do we let go so we can be moved by another person? How can we let ourselves be surprised by emotion rather than always wanting to control the course of our existence? Signed by choreographer Jarkko Partanen and director Juni Klein, members of the WAUHAUS collective, Fluids is brought to the stage by five high-flying performers. Immersed in an ultra-efficient scenography and sound creation, they invent a piece of remarkable plasticity.
In the press
FLUIDS is not only an exploration of form but also and above all a sociological observation, because any model of society and any political conviction is based on a conception of the human, and FLUIDS embodies a conception of the human that puts the emphasis on weakness, the need for cooperation, the slipperiness and contingency of boundaries between individuals. And the piece doesn't just point out weakness, it celebrates it.
Teemu Mäki - Finnish Dance in Focus
The sliding allows for minimal gestures and even elegant movements, but the unpredictability of the slippery floor and the swaying bodies constantly produce a carnivalesque level in the dance. The most interesting parts are the dancers' contacts, where the human encounter and touch is sometimes combined with an alienating and strange slipperiness.
